German Beer Steins
German beer mugs, also known as beer steins, became widely popular between the 14th and 16th centuries. They were made from ceramic, stoneware, glass, porcelain, and pewter. Many steins featured a metal lid that protected the drink from dust and insects and also helped keep the beer from going flat.
Steins from Westerwald and Bavaria are especially well known. They were often decorated with coats of arms, hunting scenes, military themes, and views of German towns. By the 19th century, these mugs had become more than just drinking vessels—they were also popular souvenirs and collectible items.
